Box Score | Season Statistics

WICHITA, Kan. - The fifth-ranked Lady Blues' 12-set winning streak came to an end but their match winning streak stayed alive as they won at Newman in four sets (24-26, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17) Tuesday night to improve to 12-1.

They will wrap up their non-conference action with four matches Friday and Saturday as they host the Ramada Inn Lady Blues Fall Classic. Friday they open against Dallas Baptist at 2 p.m.

The contest featured a coaching matchup of Washburn's Chris Herron against his former three-time All-American, Tessa Jones, the first-year coach at Newman.

Washburn led by five midway through the first set before the Jets (1-10) went on an 8-1 run to go up 16-14. The Lady Blues gave up five of those points on errors. Washburn regained the lead and then got to set point at 24-22 on a kill from Jessica Fey. Three straight errors reversed that and gave the Jets set point at 25-24. Gabby Loxterman ended the set for Newman with a kill and ended Washburn's streak of four straight 3-0 sweeps.

The Lady Blues were able pull away in each of the final three sets to win their fifth straight. Up by just one at 19-18, Washburn closed the second set on a 6-0 run. The Jets were just two points from the Lady Blues in the third set at 16-14 before Washburn closed that set on a 9-3 run. The Lady Blues used a 7-2 run to win the fourth set.

Washburn hit .261 in the match after hitting under .200 in the first two sets. The Lady Blues closed the match by hitting .367 in set three and .350 in set four.

Abby Wittman controlled the WU offense with 32 assists. Fey had 15 kills and hit .481 with two errors in 27 attempts. Breanna Lewis had 14 kills and hit .407 with three errors, also with 27 swings. Hillary Hughes added 10 kills and had a double-double with 12 digs.

Libero Kelsey Lewis had 22 digs to lead the defense. Washburn had just three blocks with Hughes, Fey and Marissa Cox each getting hands on two apiece.

Karol Marins led the Jets with 12 kills and Haley Dotson had 10.
