Ichabods have 4-game winning streak snapped at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- A 3-point onslaught midway through the second half was too much for the Ichabods to overcome as the Washburn Ichabods fell at Southwest Baptist 80-69 snapping their four-game winning streak in the process. Washburn will be back in action on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Lee Arena when they will face Missouri Southern.

The Ichabods (9-4, 4-2 MIAA) had pulled within one at 52-51 with 8:41 to play after a drive by Will McNeill, but the Bearcats went on a 10-0 run after hitting back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to build a 62-51 lead with 6:28 remaining in the game.

After the teams traded buckets, Alex North hit his first field goal of the game with a 3-pointer cutting Southwest Baptist's lead to seven at 64-57 with 3:37 remaining.

The Ichabods cut the lead back to seven again with 2:10 remaining after a pair of free throws by McNeill. SBU hit one free throw and the North hit a 3-pointer for the Ichabods to cut the lead to five at 67-62 with 1:55 to go.

Washburn called a timeout and after an Ichabod foul, the Bearcats hit one of two free throws and Martin Mitchell scored on a drive to cut the Bearcat lead to four with 1:25 remaining at 68-64.

The Ichabods called another timeout and SBU Mitchell fouled Preston Guiot to send him to the line when he hit both free throws staking the Bearcats back to a six point lead at 70-64 with 1:06 to play.

Washburn came up empty on their next possession on two attempts and SBU went back to the line.

The Ichabods would cut the lead to four with 28 seconds left after a pair of SBU free throws after a long 3-pointer by McNeill giving him his 28th point of the night forcing a Bearcat timeout leading 73-69.

An intentional foul and bucket by Robson Memnon put the Bearcats up seven after the free throw at 76-69 and returning the ball back to the Bearcats.

SBU would hit their last three free throws to wrap up the game and the 11-point win at 80-69.

The Ichabods trailed by four at the break after McNeill connected on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer pulling Washburn within four at 36-32 as the Bearcats took the lead into the halftime locker room.

McNeill led the Ichabods with 28 points adding three steals. Mitchell had 17 points and Alex North scored 10. Joseph Smith had a career-high 11 rebounds with nine coming on the defensive end.

Ryan Dougherty led the Bearcats with 18 points.

The Bearcats connected on 11 3-pointer in the game attempting 37 overall. The Bearcats hit 23 field goals overall in the game and went 23 of 36 from the free throw line. SBU also outrebounded the Ichabods 47 to 34.

Washburn finished 22 of 52 from the field overall and went 6 of 17 from behind the 3-point line. Washburn was 19 of 27 from the free throw line.

The teams combined for 47 fouls with the Ichabods being whistled for 24. Four Ichabods (Smith, Jeff Reid, Mitchell and Bobby Chipman) all fouled out.
