EMPORIA, Kan. -- Three Lady Blues had double-doubles as third-ranked Washburn beat Emporia State 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20) Tuesday night in front of 1,012 fans in Emporia.

The Lady Blues beat the Hornets for the seventh straight time and won the season series for the third straight time. They improved to 24-1 and 11-1 in the MIAA as they won their 10th straight match overall. ESU dropped to 16-8 and 6-5 in the league.

The Lady Blues will take a break from MIAA action to play Saturday at 6 p.m. at Drury.

Hillary Hughes and Jessica Fey led four Lady Blues in double-figure kills as they had 16 each. Kelsey Lewis added 12 and Jessica Kopp had 10. Hughes added 12 digs and Lewis had 20 for double-doubles. Abby Wittman led the defense with 25 digs while Courtney Chuchman added 13.

Wittman also had a double-double with 44 assists as she led the Washburn offense to a .203 attack and 62 kills. Emporia State hit .145 with 53 kills. The Lady Blues blocked 14 ESU attacks to tie a season high.

A 4-0 ESU run gave the Hornets a 15-14 lead in the fourth set before Lewis' kill tied it at 15. That started a 6-0 run that put Washburn  up 20-15. Fey had one of her team-leading six blocks during the run.

The Hornets answered with four straight points to get within one but a kill from Kopp and an ESU attack error put Washburn up 22-19. After an ESU point, Fey's two kills got Washburn to match point and then Hughes set down the final point with a kill to end the match.

Marissa Cox blocked five Hornet attacks in the match while Lewis added four and Wittman and Hughes had three. Lewis also added two aces and finished with 17.5 points, one away from her career high.

Washburn hit .324 in the opening set while ESU had a .135 percentage. Hughes connected with kills on her first four attacks to give Washburn an 11-7 lead. The Hornets got within three after that but never any closer. Lewis' kill late in the match started a 4-0 run that closed it for Washburn.

Emporia State went up 7-2 in the second set but a 9-1 run quickly turned that around and Washburn led 11-8. Fey had three kills during that stretch. The Lady Blues later used a 6-0 run to take a 22-12 lead and then a kill from Fey got them to match point at 24-17. The Hornets scored five straight to get within two before Lewis' kill clinched the set.

Emporia State won a close third set that had 14 ties and nine lead changes to force a fourth set. This was the seventh time in the last eight matches against Emporia State that they went at least to four sets.

Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets with 16 kills and had 12 digs for a double. Katie Deutschmann added 10 kills, 30 assists and eight digs for a near triple-double.
