Lady Blues hit over .400 in sweep of Missouri Southern

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 4 Washburn hit .434 in a 25-14, 25-17, 25-11 win over Missouri Southern Tuesday night in Lee Arena. The Lady Blues won their 47th straight home match and improved to 18-1 and 6-1 in the MIAA.

The Lady Blues will play two matches this weekend starting Friday at Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m. and Saturday at seventh-ranked Central Missouri at 7 p.m.

Marissa Cox hit .667 with eight kills and Jessica Fey hit .636, also with eight kills. Kelsey Lewis and Jessica Kopp also added eight kills while hitting over .350 each. Hillary Hughes had five service aces including three during a 9-0 run in the second set that she served.

Missouri Southern (0-19, 0-8 MIAA) scored the first point of the match but didn't lead again until early in the third set. Washburn was down 3-2 in set three before scoring six straight points and eventually 15 of the next 17 to go up 17-5. The Lady Blues ended the match on a 4-1 run and defensive specialist Sami McHenry, playing in the front row toward the end of the match, got the match-winning kill.

Washburn hit .583 in that set and .522 in the first set. The Lady Blues answered MSSU's match-opening point with a 5-0 run and a 4-0 run later made it 13-5, Washburn. The Lady Blues used a 9-0 run early in the second set to go up 10-1.

Abby Wittman set 28 assists and she added six digs. Courtney Churchman led the defense with eight digs. Washburn blocked five shots while the Lions had no blocks. Kopp led Washburn with three blocks.

Missouri Southern hit .181 in the match and was led by Katie Politte with nine kills. Payton Graves hit .833 with five kills and no errors in six swings.
