Five Lady Blues reach double figures in 20-point win over FHSU

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Lady Blues never trailed and earned their 11th straight 20-win season with a 75-55 victory Saturday over Fort Hays State in Lee Arena.

No. 11 Washburn improved to 20-3 overall and remained one half game out of first in the MIAA with a 13-1 league record. The Lady Blues, winners of 12 straight now, will play their second of three straight home games Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Central Missouri.

Ebonie Williams went 6 of 10 from the field for 13 points and Stevi Schultz went 5 of 6 from the field for 12 points. Laura Kinderknecht hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points and she tied her career high with six assists.

Cassie Lombardino just missed her second straight double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Tiara George came off the bench to score 11 points and grab six rebounds.

The Lady Blues shot 49 percent from the field and kept the Tigers (15-7, 7-7 MIAA) to 35 percent shooting. Washburn has still allowed just one opponent to reach 40 percent shooting this year.

The Tigers got no closer than nine points in the second half after being down by 12 at the break. Sierra Moeller's lay-up with 8:29 remaining put Washburn up by 20 for the first time and then Williams' lay-up at 4:35 made it a game-high 25-point lead at 69-44. The Tigers answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 18 but they got no closer after that.

Williams played just five minutes in the first half and didn't take a shot. All 13 of her points came in the final 20 minutes.

Washburn edged FHSU 41-38 in rebounds and committed 10 turnovers while FHSU had 13. The Lady Blues were 50 percent (5 of 10) from 3-point range while Fort Hays State was 27 percent (4 of 15). Washburn shot just eight free throws and made six of them.

After two ties early in the game, Washburn pushed the lead to nine, 19-10 with 8:28 remaining in the first half. The Tigers scored eight straight after that to get within a point but Washburn outscored FHSU 13-2 the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Kinderknecht gave Washburn a 10-point lead with 1:59 left in the half and Lombardino's jumper with 23 seconds left gave Washburn a 32-20 halftime lead.

Kate Lehman led the Tigers with 17 points as she went 7 of 13 from the field with four blocked shots. Katelyn Edwards had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.


Notes: The Lady Blues improved to 43-26 all-time against Fort Hays State…Washburn swept the season series and has won 18 of the last 19 meetings….Washburn has won nine straight in Lee Arena against FHSU…the Lady Blues earned their 22nd 20-win season and head coach Ron McHenry earned his 11th straight in his 12th year.
