Hillary Hughes reached double figures in kills twice and
Abby Wittman had a pair of double-doubles Friday as No. 7 Washburn opened the 2012 season with wins over Barry and Southern Indiana in the first day of the Palm Beach Atlantic Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic. Barry was defeated 25-23, 25-17, 25-22 and Washburn beat USI 23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-12.
Hughes had 16 kills and hit .379 against Barry and had 15 kills and hit .448 against Southern Indiana. She averaged a .414 attack percentage throughout the day. Wittman had over 30 assists in both matches and 13 digs against Barry and 12 against USI.
Barry led early in the opening set but a 10-3 Washburn run gave the Lady Blues a 12-6 lead. Fey served four straight points for Washburn to end that run and she had two aces during the stretch. Freshman starter
Rebecca Maasen's first career kill made it 13-7 and then another kill from her later made it 16-9. She finished the match with five kills.
Barry climbed back and made it 19-17 Washburn before the Lady Blues scored twice to go up by four. Barry scored three straight to get within one but then two kills from Kopp later got Washburn to set point. Fey later put the set away with a kill as Washburn held on for a two-point win.
The Lady Blues responded to close the set with a quick 6-0 lead in set two. Barry scored once before Washburn scored five more to make it 11-1. Hughes had a kill and two straight aces during that second stretch. Barry climbed within seven at 18-11 and got within six after Washburn had already reached 23. Two more kills from Hughes finished the set.
Barry scored the first two in the second set and had a 5-2 lead early. A kill from Kopp later tied it at 11-11 and then she tied it again at 14-14. There were three more ties after that before Washburn took a 22-19 lead with a 4-1 run. The Buccaneers responded with three straight points for the 11th tie of the set but Washburn scored three straight for the win, the first two on Barry errors and the final on a kill from Fey.
Washburn hit .227 and had four blocks while the Buccaneers hit .202 and also had four blocks. Kopp had 10 kills and six digs and Fey had nine kills and hit .438 in the match. Hughes added seven digs to her 16 kills and hit .379. Lewis had eight digs as libero. Kopp finished the match with 10 kills.
The Lady Blues dropped their opening set to Southern Indiana 25-23 in a contest that big runs by each team. Down 9-8, Hughes got two straight kills that started a 7-0 run to put Washburn up 15-9. Southern Indiana answered with a 11-2 run to go up 20-17. Washburn got within one at 23-22 off two straight kills from Fey but USI eventually closed it out.
Washburn responded in the second set with a big win and then won set three by three points. The Lady Blues were up 8-7 in the fourth set and went on a 6-0 run and later an 8-1 run that gave them a 24-11 lead. Kopp finished the match with a kill after one more USI point.
Fey matched Hughes' 15 kills and she hit .393 with four digs. Kopp had seven kills and a career-high five blocks.
Marissa Cox added four blocks. Lewis added 17 digs from the back row.
