Week 1 match notes
Warm ups . . .
The 2013 Washburn Ichabod tennis team will open their championship season facing Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday in Springfield, Mo., at 1 p.m. prior to facing Drury at 9 a.m. the following morning at the Cooper Tennis Center. The two matches will be the first of 20 dual encounters the Ichabod tennis team will have this season.
Fall season recap . . .
• Junior
Bobby Florence picked up a team-high six wins during the fall slate going 6-2.
• He reached the semifinals of the season-opening Washburn Invitational and then the finals of the B singles flight at the Bethany Invitational. Florence also reached the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Central Regional Tournament.
• Junior
Chance Joost fell in the semifinals of the Washburn Invitational and finished the fall with a 4-3 record.
• Sophomore
Jacob Long was 5-3 during the fall season winning the F singles flight at the Bethany Invitational.
• In doubles action, Fletcher and junior
Arek Kozaczuk were a combined 6-1 after winning the A doubles flight at the Bethany Invitational. They also reached the semifinals of the USTA/ITA Central Regional Tournament.
• As a team the Ichabods were a combined 28-21 in singles play and 11-7 in doubles action during the fall.
Up Next. . .
Washburn will return to action on Feb. 9 when they will face Ouachita Baptist and then take a break from matches until March 1 when they will take on Wichita State. Washburn will open its home slate against Southeastern Oklahoma at 11 a.m. at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
