Willer powers offense to win at Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. -- Leanna Willer had a double-double and hit .484 as the Ichabods cruised to a 25-7, 25-17, 25-18 win Thursday night at Missouri Southern. No. 13 Washburn won its ninth straight match and improved to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in the MIAA.

The Ichabods will remain in Joplin and play three matches this weekend in the MSSU Invite. Friday they'll play East Central at 4 p.m.

The third set was tied at 12-12 before Washburn scored six of the next seven points to take an 18-13 lead.The Lions scored two straight after that but Willer went on to score four of Washburn's final seven points off kills to clinch the match. In the third set alone she had 11 kills and no errors with a .688 attack percentage. Willer finished with 18 kills and 10 digs for her fifth straight double-double.

Corrine Stringer had eight kills and Marissa Cox had seven as both played off the bench. Sarah Vicory had five kills and a team-high four blocks. Abby Wittman had 31 assists and Kelsey Lewis led the back row with 13 digs.

Washburn hit .344 as a team while the Lions (3-12, 0-7 MIAA) hit .055 in the match. Missouri Southern had seven blocks while Washburn had five but the Ichabods lead in digs, 50-32 and in kills, 45-25.


The Ichabods had two early 8-0 runs in the first set, scoring 17 of the first 20 points, and ended the set on an 8-1 run to hold the Lions to seven points.

The Lions stayed close for the first half of the second set but an 8-0 run eventually put the set away as Washburn lead 24-15.
