Ichabods respond to early ESU lead with sweep

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods responded to a five-point deficit early in the first set and went on to sweep Emporia State, 25-23, 25-14, 25-16 Wednesday evening at Schendel Court in Lee Arena. Washburn won its ninth straight match in the Turnpike Tussle and stopped Emporia State's seven-match winning streak.

Washburn will travel to Bolivar, Mo., Saturday for a triangular at Southwest Baptist. The Ichabods will play Southern Arkansas at 1 p.m. and then Southwest Baptist at 3 p.m.

Leanna Willer and Corrinne Stringer each had 11 kills for Washburn. Stringer hit .308 and Willer had a double-double with 11 digs. Sarah Vicory had her hands up on all eight of Washburn's blocks and she aadded eight kills and a .375 attack percentage. Abby Wittman had a double-double with 36 assists and 14 digs.

Emporia State (15-8, 6-5 MIAA) took a 4-1 lead in the first set. A 5-0 Hornet run later broke a 7-7 tie that gave them a 12-7 lead. Washburn responded with a 4-0 run after that but played from behind until a 3-0 run later tied the set at 18-18.

The Hornets scored four of the next six after that to lead 22-20 before Washburn finally took its first lead in the match with a 3-0 run. Sami McHenry started the run and then two straight ESU errors ended it.The Hornets scored one more on a Washburn error but a kill from Corrinne Stringer and an ESU error ended the set.

Washburn then hit .364 in the second set and .290 in the third set for easy wins. The Ichabods ended the second set on a 15-4 run and ended the third on an 11-5 run.

Washburn hit .272 as a team while the Hornets had a .092 attack percentage. Paige Vanderpool led ESU with eight kills and 12 digs.
