Stringer helps Ichabods to sweep over Fort Hays State

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Corrinne Stringer had 12 kills and hit .458 as Washburn swept Fort Hays State 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 Friday night at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.

No. 15 Washburn improved to 14-3 and 4-0 in the MIAA after playing its first home MIAA match. The Ichabods will return to Lee Arena Saturday at 3 p.m. against fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney looking for their eighth straight win and first over UNK since 1986.

Stringer had just one error in 24 attemps. She also added a team-high five blocks as the Ichabods blocked 10 Tiger attacks. Leanna Willer led Washburn with 15 kills and she had a double-double with 11 digs. Abby Wittman had 36 assists and 11 digs and Kelsey Lewis led Washburn with 12 digs and three aces.

The Ichabods only trailed early in the second set. The Tigers (3-10, 1-5 MIAA) scored the first two points and led 7-5 before Washburn scored seven straight to go up, 10-7. The Tigers later tied the set at 14-14 on a 4-0 run and later took a 16-15 lead. Washburn scored the next seven points after that to lead for good. Stringer then got Washburn to set point and after two FHSU points that got the Tigers within two, Willer set down the final kill to put Washburn up 2-0.

The Ichabods led 4-0 and 10-3 in the third set and went up 22-9 after a 6-0 run to put the match away.

Washburn hit .256 in the match and FHSU had a .112 attack percentage. Each team had 51 digs and Washburn led in kills, 45-35 and in blocks, 10-9. Madison Schwartz led the Tigers with 12 kills and Makenzie Weinman had 19 digs.
