Washburn solid all around in pair of sweeps

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Washburn hit over .350 twice and didn't give up more than 20 points a set in a pair of sweeps Saturday at a triangular at Southwest Baptist. The 11th-ranked Ichabods beat Southern Arkansas 25-13, 25-7, 25-20 and then beat SBU 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 in the two non-conference matches.
 
Washburn (25-4) will return to MIAA action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at Fort Hays State.
 
Sarah Vicory and Korie Thompson each recorded 11 kills against the Muleriders. Vicory had one error in 15 attempts for a .667 attack percentage and Thompson hit .579 with no errors in 19 swings. Marissa Cox had nine kills and a .818 attack percentage with no errors in 11 attempts.
 
Overall, Washburn hit .417 as a team for a season high. SAU hit .121 as a team. Washburn in kills, 50-23 and in digs, 57-33. Abby Wittman led Washburn's offense with 41 assists and she added 11 digs for a double-double. Kelsey Lewis had 13 digs to lead the defense.
 
Washburn trailed just once in the match, 2-0 in the second set but never allowed consecutive points to the Muleriders again in the set. The Ichabods had two 7-0 runs and a 6-0 run as they hit .586 as a team with only one error and scored 25 of the final 30 points to win 25-7.
 
Cox hit .429 against SBU and led Washburn with 11 kills. Vicory hit .529 as she was error free with nine kills. Corrinne Stringer had eight. Lewis and Wittman led with 13 digs and Wittman once again had a double-double with 38 assists.
 
Washburn blocked seven SBU shots and kept the Bearcats to just two blocks after they had 16 stuffs in a match in Topeka last month.
 
Washburn never trailed or allowed SBU to get to a tie in the entire match. The Ichabods hit .354 as a team while SBU had a .108 attack percentage.
