TOEPKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team advanced into the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament with a 4-2 penalty kick win over Nebraska-Kearney. Washburn will take on Central Oklahoma in Olathe on Friday at 4 p.m. The Bronchos knocked off the top-seeded Central Missouri 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
After the teams each recorded goals in the first seven minutes, the remaining 103-plus minutes were scoreless. Washburn scored first when
Caysie Beetley scored her fourth goal of the season from 10-yards out off an assist from
Cadence Bourne. The Lopers wasted little time scoring just under three minutes later when McKinzie Rieber scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Becka Talcott as the team entered the half tied at 1-1.
In the second half, neither scored as the Lopers had a 7 to 1 advantage in shots. After 90 minutes, the teams remained tied and it was still tied after two 10-minute overtime periods sending it to a shootout.
The Lopers went first and Becka Tacott scored on her attempt past Washburn's
Tori Fuglister. Washburn's
Lara Doescher connected on Washburn's first attempt tying the PK session 1-1. Holly Brown sent her shot wide right for the Lopers and Washburn would then go up 2-1 after Beelley's shot found the back of the net. Breezy Jahnke connected on the Lopers' next attempt tying the score back at 2-2, but it was short lived as
Rachel Hansen's attempt sailed past the Lopers' Katelin Mielke in net. Kristyn Otter's attempt to Fuglister's right was stopped by an outstretched hand and then
Devon Schmitz wrapped up the win sending her shot into the goal and the Ichabods to Olathe.
The tie (as it's recorded by the NCAA) was the first time the Ichabods had advanced in the postseason in penalty kicks since a Nov. 3, 2006 win over Missouri Southern in the NCAA Tournament.
