JOPLIN, Mo. – No. 20 Washburn led early in each half but trailed the rest of the game in a 68-59 loss Saturday afternoon at Missouri Southern.
 
The Ichabods fell to 5-3 and 1-1 in the MIAA. They will now break for 11 days and then host their MIAA home opener December 19 against Lincoln.
 
Janelle Travis led the Ichabods with 19 points as she was 6 of 12 from the field and 3 of 9 from 3-point range. Overall, Washburn shot a season-low 35 percent from the field. It was their first time scoring less than 78 points this year.
 
The Ichabods trailed by five at halftime but opened the second half on a 7-0 run to go up by two, their first lead since their first possession of the game. The Lions then went ahead briefly before Travis tied the game with a 3-pointer at 16:04.
 
The Lions took the lead for good after that and pushed it to double digits at the 8:52 mark and to a game-high 13 points at 6:35.
 
Washburn threatened with a 10-0 run to get within three with 2:58 to go but only scored two points after that.
 
Casyn Buchman had 14 points for Washburn as she was 6 of 14 from the field. Brittney Lynch scored 10 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
 
The Ichabods led the rebound battle, 41-29 but had 17 turnovers while MSSU had 15. The Lions took advantage with 17 points off turnovers while Washburn had just six.
 
Shonte Clay led the Lions with 19 points with an 8 of 10 performance from the field. Alexis Fitzpatrick hit three 3-pointers and scored 16 points.
 
Kara Lee came off the bench for Washburn to score 10 of Washburn's 12 bench points. Buchman led Washburn with three assists.
 
Washburn shot just 3 of 15 (20 percent) from 3-point range. Each team made 16 free throws with Washburn taking 19 shots and the Lions shooting 20.
