FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Washburn hit .384 as a team and
Sarah Vicory hit .615 as the 11th-ranked Ichabods defeated Dallas Baptist 25-21, 25-10, 25-12 Friday night in their second match of the Arkansas-Fort Smith MaryBeth Suduth Invitational. The Ichabods fell 25-23, 25-17, 13-25, 25-21 to Texas Women's in the morning match.
Washburn will play Harding Saturday at 10 a.m. and then play the host Lions at 6 p.m. to finish the weekend.
Vicory had nine kills and one error in 13 attempts.
Leanna Willer led Washburn with 14 kills and hit .500 with no errors in 28 swings.
Marissa Cox also hit .500 with 10 kills and an error in 18 attempts.
Washburn blocked 10 Patriot attacks, including six in the first set. Vicory had a hand on five of them and
Rebecca Maasen had four.
Abby Wittman led Washburn with 33 assists and
Kelsey Lewis led with 12 digs.
The Ichabods held DBU to an .066 attack while they hit progressively better in each set. Washburn hit .244 in the opener, .419 in the second set and then was error free in the third with a .609 attack percentage. DBU didn't hit over .100 until the third set.
Against Texas Women's, Cox and Willer each had 14 kills and
Korie Thompson had 11 off the bench. Wittman had 47 assists and 17 digs for a double-double. Willer also had a double-double with 17 digs and Lewis led the defense with 18 digs.
The first set was tied 12 times and Washburn led near the end at 23-22 after a 3-0 run. The Pioneers then scored three straight to take the set. Momentum carried into the second set as TWU built a 13-5 lead. Washburn never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Washburn used a 9-2 run in the third set to build a 14-8 lead and then closed the set on an 11-4 run but the Pioneers led the entire way the fourth set after a 2-2 tie to go on and clinch the match. Washburn was within two at 21-19 but two straight errors put TWU too far ahead.
