BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The No. 6-ranked Washburn Ichabods had three hittters reach double-figure kills in a 3-1 win over Southwest Baptist picking up a 25-19, 15-25, 25-22 and 25-23 win over Southwest Baptist. Washburn improved to 17-1 overall remaining in a first-place tie with a 9-1 MIAA record.
In the opening set, the Ichabods broke at 15-15 tie with a kill from
Marissa Cox finishing the set on a 10-4 run taking the first set 25-19. Washburn was limited to only eight kills in the second set while hitting .026 with seven errors in 38 swings as the Bearcats took game two 25-15. The Ichabods never led in the second set as SBU finished off the rally taking a 14-12 lead to a 25-15 in the frame.
Set three, Washburn and Southwest Bapttist were tied at 17 before Cox picked up a kill followed by a kill from
Natalie Bates and an ace by
Alyssa Carney. Washburn stretched the lead to 21-17 after kills from
Sarah Vicory. The Ichabods would go on to win the set 25-24.
Washburn took set four and wrapped up the match with a 25-23 win over the Bearcats. Washburn broke a 23-all tie with a kill from
Leanna Willer and then Bates clinched the win with another kill.
Cox led the Ichabods with 13 kills while Willer had 12 and Vicory recorded 10. Bates had 35 assists. Willer added 16 digs to record a double double and Carney led the Ichabods with 21 digs. Vicory led Washburn with four total blocks.
There were seven lead changes in the fourth set and 12 ties. SBU had three in double figure kills led by Kalyn Sotomayor's 13.
