Washburn soccer team to host Tigers and Lopers this weekend

 Opening Notes
•     The Washburn Ichabod soccer team is heading into the final four games of the regular season as they will host Fort Hays State at 5 p.m. on Friday night followed by a Sunday afternoon match up with Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at 2 p.m.
•    The Ichabods are 0-13-1 overall and 0-9-1 in MIAA play.
•    Last week the Ichabods fell 1-0 to Missouri Southern in overtime on Oct. 17 and then lost to Southwest Baptist 4-1 on Oct. 19.
•     The Ichabods were picked fifth in the MIAA preseason coaches poll.

 'Bod's and Ends
•     The Ichabods are looking for their first win of the season.
•    Washburn has scored only five goals in 1,216 minutes of action this season.
•     The Washburn Ichabod soccer team has 13 freshmen on the roster this season.
•     Washburn is 2-12 in matches the last two seasons in matches which were decided by one goal going 0-9 this season.
•     Emily Stauffer leads the Ichabods with two goals this season.
•     Sara Specht has three assists to lead the Ichabods.
•    Devon Schmitz recorded her first goal of the season and her third of her career against Emporia State.
•    Audra Keehn scored her first collegiate goal against Northern State off an assist from Jenna Cunninghman.
•    Sophia Sabala scored her first career goal against Southwest Baptist on Oct. 19.
•    Washburn has been outshot by its opponents 246 to 103 this season including an 119 to 50 disadvantage in the first half of matches this season.
•     Washburn has recorded 33 corner kicks compared to 74 for its opponents.
•     Four of the seniors (Tori Fuglister, Valerie Harms, Jenna Cunningham and Whitney Skinner) have been part of the program for  four years.
•     With eight sophomores and three redshirt freshmen the Ichabods will have 24 of their 30 players listed as underclassmen.
•     Washburn's roster has 30 players on it for the 2014 season. It is the largest roster the Ichabods have had in the program's history.
•    Kaitlin Minnich saw her first action in goal against Emporia State and shut the Hornets out for the final 65 minutes of the match with four saves picking up the tie in net.

 Noting Fort Hays State
•    FHSU (8-4-2, 6-2-2 MIAA) sits tied for third in the conference standings with Central Oklahoma, and is undefeated in its last four games (including a tie with the Bronchos), with all four games marked as shutouts.  With four matches remaining in the regular season.
•    The Tigers rank in the top five of several categories in the MIAA, including a third-place ranking in assists (21, 1.50 per game) and a fourth-place standing in points (65, 4.64 per game), goals (22, 1.57 per game) and goals allowed (nine, 0.61 per game).  The team is tied for first with UCO in shutouts (nine), all which have come under the command of Kristen Thompson at goalkeeper.
•    Thompson leads the league in individual shutouts this year, and sits fourth in the conference with a 0.61 goals against average.  In 14 starts, Thompson has picked up 62 total saves on the year.
•    Hailey Davey leads the league with nine assists on the season and is just one short of tying the school's single-season assists record (10).  Davey sits second on the team in overall points (13), adding two goals on the season.

 Last meeting with Fort Hays State
(Oct. 4, 2013) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods scored a late first half goal and an early second half goal while holding off a furious attack in the final 12 seconds to hold on for a 2-1 win over Fort Hays State on a windy afternoon in Yager Stadium. 
While neither team scored the final 39 minutes of the match it was the final 12 seconds which proved to be the difference in the match. The Tigers had a corner kick with 17 seconds left in to play and Kylee Loneker's shot from point-blank range was stopped by Tori Fuglister in net for Washburn. After a scrum in front of the net Fuglister secured the ball as the final three seconds ticked off the clock wrapping up the Ichabods' second-straight win.
The Tigers took the early lead, in the physical game which saw 30 whistles being called, on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box when Amanda Tallbott scored in the sixth minute.
Washburn knotted the score heading into a strong southerly wind when Lara Doescher recorded her first goal of the season on a free kick when the Fort Hays State keeper caught the ball on the goal side of the line in the 41st minute as the teams were tied 1-1 going into the half.
Brianna Ament recorded what would be the game-winner in the 52nd minute off a free kick from Megan Buckley who flicked it to Caysie Beetley who found Ament for what would be the match winner.
Fuglister had eight saves in the match while facing 13 shots. Washburn was outshot nine to seven in shots on goal overall. Lara Doescher led Washburn with three shots on goal..

 Noting Nebraska-Kearney
•    The Lopers won the first meeting of the season 1-0 on Sept. 21 when the Lopers scored in the 61st minute for the winner.
•    Coming off a 1-0 victory over Northwest Missouri State, UNK is now 3-7-1 in league play, good for nine points. There is a three-way tie for eighth place, each squad having 10 points.
•    The Lopers are 3-10-1 overall and 3-7-0 in MIAA play.
•    They have 10 goals this season (0.71 per match) while allowing 30 goals (2.14 GAA).
•    Montanna Hosterman leads the team with three goals adding two assists for a team-high eight points.

 Last meeting with Nebraska-Kearney
(Sept. 21, 2014) KEARNEY, Neb. -- Washburn was outshot 8 to 1 in the second half as Nebraska-Kearney scored the winning goal in the frame in a 1-0 win over the Ichabods.
The teams went into the locker room scoreless after the first half as both teams had two shots. In the second half, the Lopers turned up the pressure in the stanza gaining seven more shots that Washburn scoring the winning goal in the 61st minute when Marika Van Brocklin scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Meaghan Pasbrig scoring from 15 yards out.
All three of Washburn's shots were on goal with Jenna Cunningham, Bailey Wobig and Whitney Skinner. Tori Fuglister had three saves in net allowing the lone goal for the Lopers.

• Senior goalkeeper Tori Fuglister needs eight more saves to move into first place all-time at Washburn. She has 312 career saves in her career at Washburn. The all-time leader is Jenna Hatlestad with 319 career saves.
• Fuglister has played in 62 matches at Washburn and she needs one match played to move into first on the all-time goalie games played chart.

 Up next
The Ichabods will wrap up the home slate on Oct. 31 against Emporia State.
