Ball drops for Ichabods in hot-shooting first half

TOPEKA, Kan. – The eighth-ranked Ichabods shot 73 percent in the first half with eight made 3-pointers as they cruised to a 93-42 New Year's Eve victory Wednesday over St. Mary (Kan.).
 
Washburn improved to 10-2 in its final non-conference game of the year. The Bods will return to MIAA action Saturday with a 5 p.m. game against Missouri Western at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
The Ichabods shot 19 of 26 from the field in the first half and 8 of 10 from 3-point range. They led 56-21 at the break after holding the Spires (2-9 and playing the game as an exhibition) to 27 percent shooting in the first half.
 
The Bods slowed down to just 41 percent shooting in the second half but led by at least 40 points most of that half. They build a game-high 52-point lead in the final minute and the 51 points they ended up winning by tied for the 14th largest margin of victory in school history.
 
Honor Duvall was a perfect 7 for 7 from the field for 14 points. She also added a game-high six rebounds. Casyn Buchman and Taylor Ignoto each had 11 points. Buchman hit three 3-pointers. Janelle Travis also had three treys for nine points.
 
Buchman had six assists as Washburn had 23 assists on 34 made baskets as a team. The Bod offense assists on 17 of the 19 makes in the first half.
 
Alyxis Bowens came off the bench and had eight points and five rebounds. Allyssa Nikkel also had five rebounds and she scored six points. Cindy Demosthene scored four points with five rebounds.
 
The Ichabods won the rebound battle 47-22 and had 20 turnovers while St. Mary had 27. Washburn blocked 11 shots to tie a season high. Duvall got a hand on four of them and Gibbs swatted three. Jayna Smith had five steals.
