Ichabods beat Northwest Oklahoma to open weekend with four straight sweeps

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Three Ichabods recorded double figures in kills as Washburn swept Northwestern Oklahoma 25-9, 25-22, 25-15 Saturday afternoon in their final match of the Midwestern State Hampton Inn-vitational.
 
Washburn improved to 4-0 with four straight sweeps this weekend. Head coach Chris Herron improved to 52-0 in season-opening weekend tournaments. The Ichabods will continue action next Friday and Saturday with four matches in the South Central Tournament hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central.
 
Marissa Cox hit .480 with a team-high 13 kills and just one error in 25 attempts. Leanna Willer and Sarah Vicory each had 10 kills with Vicory hitting .600 with an error in 15 swings. Alyssa Carney had 22 digs and Liz Powell had 22 assists. Mattie-Ann Swenson led the Ichabods above the net with five blocks.
 
The Ichabods responded to a close second set with an 11-0 run to open the third set. The Rangers never got within nine points after that as Washburn easily closed the match.
 
Washburn hit .304 in the match while Northwestern Oklahoma hit .044 as a team. Washburn had eight blocks while NWOSU had four.
 
Washburn opened the first set with a 5-0 run and later led 11-2. A 5-0 run for Washburn later ended the set. The second set was much closer as there were nine tie scores. The Rangers scored two straight to tie it at 12-12 but Washburn answered with four straight points and led the rest of the way. A 5-1 run pulled Northwestern Oklahoma within two late at 23-21 but a Ranger error and later a kill from Vicory clinched the set.
