Ichabods give up halftime lead, rally late but come up short at Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH – Casyn Buchman capped a 5-0 Washburn run with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to get Washburn within two points Saturday at Northeastern State but the RiverHawks hit two free throws in the final seconds to win 58-54.
 
The Ichabods fell to 13-5 overall and 5-5 in the MIAA. They'll play their first home game since January 5 when they host Nebraska-Kearney Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Schendel Court in Lee Arena.
 
Buchman scored all five of the Ichabods' points during their final run and she ended up with a team-high 20 points. She was 8 of 19 from the field and hit three 3-pointers.
 
Washburn jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 13-2 and led the entire first half. Buchman scored the first five points of the game as well as the last five. Dana Channel hit a layup at 8:06 of the first half to give the Bods a game-high 13-point lead but the RiverHawks ended the half on a 15-4 run to cut Washburn's lead to 25-23 at break.
 
NSU tied the game five minutes into the second half and then took the lead at 14:26. Buchman's jumper at 11:15 gave the Ichabods their final lead of the day but an 11-2 NSU run later gave the RiverHawks a 51-42 lead with 6:30 remaining.
 
They pushed it as high as a 10-point lead before Buchman's 5-0 run got the Bods within two at the 16-second mark.
 
Both teams shot under 40 percent from the field in the game and Washburn held a slight 36-32 lead in rebounding. The Bods turned the ball over 14 times while NSU had nine giveaways.
 
Taylor Ignoto hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points and Ally Nikkel had eight points. Jayna Smith led the Bods with nine rebounds and Felisha Gibbs, making her first start, had six rebounds.
 
Chelsey Beathard led the RiverHawks with 16 points as she was 4 of 8 from the field and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.
