Ichabods set to wrap up regular season with huge weekend matches

 Opening Notes
•     The Washburn Ichabod soccer team will wrap up the regular season with a postseason berth on the line as they travel to Emporia State on Oct. 30 and then will  have senior day on Nov. 1 when they host Fort Hays State at 1 p.m. inside Yager Stadium.
•    Washburn is tied for eighth in the MIAA race with Lindenwood and Nebraska-Kearney with 11 points trailing Missouri Western and Emporia State who each have 13 points. Fort Hays State who has 15 points entering the final weekend of the year. The top eight in the final standings will advance to the MIAA Tournament.
•    The Ichabods are coming off two straight 1-1 double overtime ties in games at Fort Hays State on Oct. 23 and at Nebraska-Kearney on Oct. 25.
•    The Ichabods have five ties this season which is one shy of tying the school single season record for ties of six set in 2006. The MIAA record for ties in a season is also six set three times.
•    Washburn head coach Chris Jones spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Fort Hays State helping the Tigers to a 20-13-5 record in two seasons.

 'Bod's and Ends
•    The Ichabods have scored 14 goals in 16 matches this season after scoring only eight goals in 18 matches in 2014.
•    The Ichabods are being outshot 217 to 188 this season and 5 to 4 in overtime. Last season in 2014, Washburn attempted only 143 shots while being outshot 305.
•    Kaitlin Minnich has recorded 74 saves and a .796 save percentage in her first 16 collegiate starts playing all 1,158 minutes this season in net for the Ichabods.
•    Paige Swanson leads the team with four goals and ten points.
•    Emily Stauffer has three goals and Michelle Keleher and Presley Wiggins each have two goals.
•    Sara Specht leads the Ichabods with three assists while Cadence Bourne, Morgan El-Attrache and Swanson each have two.
•    Sara Specht has seven career assists which ranks for 13th on the all-time Ichabod chart.
•    Swanson's four goals are the most by a freshman since Tia Stovall recorded four during the 2009 season. Stovall also added eight assists that season as well leading the team with 16 points.

   Noting Emporia State
•    The Hornets are 9-6-1 this season after falling losing 1-0 to Fort Hays State last time out falling to 4-4-1 in the MIAA.
•    Amelie Heun leads the team with 12 goals and Grace Linton has five.
•    Yadira Rivera has 64 saves in net and a 1.22 goal against average with five shutouts.

 Series history with Emporia State
•    The Ichabods lead the all-time series 13-8-3 over the Hornets and have outscored ESU 40-33 in 24 matches.
•    The Ichabods are 7-3-2 in matches against the Hornets in Topeka and in matches played in Emporia they are 6-5-1.
•    Washburn has lost the last two in the series and its last win in the series was on Sept. 14, 2012 in a 1-0 win in Topeka.

 Last meeting with Emporia State
(Sept. 18,  2015) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod soccer team fell 3-0 to Emporia State on Friday night in Yager Stadium in a physical battle which saw a total of 43 fouls called on the two teams in a non-conference matchup. 
The Hornets scored 4:59 into the match when McKenzie Koch scored past the Ichabod goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich off an assist from Amelie Heun. 
Neither team scored until the 86th minute when Heun scored on a header from a free kick from Koch. The Hornets added another goal 1:59 later when Jaide Allenbrand scored off a corner from Kelsey Wakefield.
Yadira Rivera recorded four saves in the match for the Hornets earning the shutout. Minnich finished with five saves for the Ichabods.
The Hornets outshot the Ichabods 13 to 5 in the match and had eight shots on goal compared to four for the Ichabods. Cadence Bourne had two shots on goal for the Ichabods and Presley Wiggins and Morgan El-Attrache each had one.
The 23 fouls called on the Hornets were the most by an Ichabod opponent since Oct. 21, 2006 when Truman State had 23 called on them and one shy of the opponent's high-water mark of fouls of 24 set by Southwest Baptist on Sept. 29, 2006. The 20 fouls called on the Ichabods were the third-most in school history tying the 20 they were whistled against Emporia State on Sept. 26, 2005. The 43 combined fouls were five shy of the Washburn record for the most fouls called in a match.
There were also seven yellow cards handed out in the match with two going to the ESU head coach and assistant coach during the match and four going against Ichabod players and one being pulled on a Hornet player.

 Noting Fort Hays State
•    The Tigers are 8-7-1 this season and 5-4-0 in the MIAA entering the match with the Ichabods as the two teams will play for the second time in eight days.
•    The Tigers have gone 2-3-1 in their last six matches and topped Emporia State 1-0 last time out on Oct. 25.
•    Cassi Moosburger has four goals to lead the team in scoring and Moosburger has added four assists for a team-high 12 points.
•    Kristen Thompson is 5-6-0 in net and has a 1.10 goal against average allowing 12 goals in 11 starts.
•    The team is outshooting its opponents 201 to 186 this season.

 Series history with Fort Hays State
•    The Ichabods are 2-4-1 all-time against the Tigers after tying their match on Oct. 23 in Hays.
•    Washburn has been outscored 11 to 7 in seven meetings and have gone 0-3-1 in matches played in Hays. 
•    Washburn is 2-1 in matches played in Topeka.

 Last meeting with Fort Hays State
(Oct. 23, 2015) HAYS, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods tied Fort Hays State in a non-conference match up on Friday night on the road in a 1-1 double overtime tie. 
Washburn took the early lead in the 11th minute when Paige Swanson recorded her team-high fourth goal of the season on an assist from Emily Stauffer when she scored from 18 yards out beating the Tiger goalkeeper to the top right of the net. Washburn led at the break 1-0 after recording two shots to the Tigers' three in the first half.
In the second half, the Tigers tied the score with 3:07 left in regulation when Kelsey Steffens scored her third goal of the season on an assist from CheyAnn Queener scoring from 15 yards out tying the score 1-1 sending the match into overtime.
In overtime each team had three shots combined in the two 10-minute periods as the match finished 1-1 after 110 minutes of action.
Sara Specht had two shots on goal and Washburn had five in the match overall. Kaitlin Minnich recorded seven saves in net facing 17 shots. 

 About head coach Chris Jones
•    Chris Jones is 4-7-5 in his first season at Washburn and is only the second coach in the program's history since 2003.
•    Jones spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Fort Hays State where the Tigers went 20-13-5 coaching 11 all-MIAA picks.
•    Prior to joining the Tigers, he was president and coach of the University of Oklahoma's men's club team.

• Washburn is 94-121-37 (.449) all-time in its 13th season of action. 
• In MIAA play, the Ichabods are 61-76-23 (.460). 
• In home matches, the Ichabods are 48-48-17(.514).
• On the road, the Ichabods are 39-65-16 (.385).
• In matches on neutral sites, the Ichabods are 7-8-4 (.474). 

 Up next
•    The Ichabods will need to finish in the top eight in the final MIAA standings to reach the MIAA Postseason Tournament which will begin on Nov. 3. Final seedings for the tournament are expected to be released on Sunday night at the conclusion of the regular season.
