Women's Basketball drops exhibition with Kansas State, 75-48

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Washburn Basketball dropped a 75-48 exhibition contest with NCAA Division I opponent Kansas State on Monday, Nov. 2 at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Ichabods hung tough with the Wildcats for a majority of the game, staying within double-digits until the 1:44 mark of the third quarter.  Washburn shot 27.1 percent from the field and hit 23.3 percent of its three-point attempts, using the long range shot early to stay within striking distance.

Trailing 2-0 after a quick layup from K-State's Breanna Lewis, Washburn took its only lead of the game with 8:11 on the clock after a three-pointer from Haley Pfau.  A 6-0 run from the Wildcats had WU looking at a five-point deficit early, but Julie Ravn connected on a three-pointer in transition at 6:46 to keep the Ichabods in a one-possession game, down 8-6.

Trailing by six again inside three minutes to go in the first quarter (14-8), WU ran off five quick unanswered points with a three-pointer from Erin Dohnalek and a jumper from Felisha Gibbs with 12 seconds to go, cutting it to one (14-13) before K-State answered with four seconds remaining, making it 16-13 at the quarter break.

Washburn stayed within five for a majority of the second quarter, cutting it to two on three occasions.  A pair of Pfau free throws put WU down 26-23 with 2:26 to go in the half, but a 7-1 run for Kansas State brought the quarter inside the one-minute mark with the Wildcats up nine, 33-24.  Gibbs hit a field goal with six seconds remaining, sending Washburn to the locker room trailing, 33-26.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Erika Lane in the opening minute of the third cut the deficit to one, 33-32, but K-State recovered with a jumper from Lewis to open a 6-0 run that lasted just under two minutes.  WU trailed 42-36 at the media timeout (4:29), but 13 unanswered over the final 3:06 of the third quarter put the game in double-digits for the first time all night with the Wildcats ahead, 57-39 at the pause.

K-State's run continued in the fourth, lasting until 7:50 when Lane scored the Ichabods' first points in over five minutes of game play. WU trailed by 18 at that point, 59-41, and that was as close as things came the rest of the way.  K-State's largest lead of the game (29) came with 1:24 to go, and Washburn's final basket was a free throw Kierra Campbell with five seconds to play.

Pfau led the team with 10 points, scoring all of them in the first half while adding five rebounds, tied with Felisha Gibbs and Cindy Demosthene for the team lead.

Lane and Alyxis Bowens each had three assists, adding eight and seven points, respectively. Dohnalek hit 2-of-2 from long range, finishing with six points and two steals.

For K-State, Breanna Lewis had 22 points and five rebounds while Megan Deines finished with 16 points.

The Ichabods play their final exhibition before the 2015-16 regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Nebraska-Omaha.  Tipoff is 7 p.m., from Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb.
