SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Washburn Women's Basketball dropped its opening game of a five-game road trip, 66-46, at No. 11 Drury on Saturday, Nov. 21.
WU (3-1) shot 38 percent from the field but hit just 3-of-14 from long range, limited by 18 total turnovers (11 in the first half) in the loss.
Washburn opened the game with a 9-6 lead at the first five minutes of play, thanks in part to five points from
Julie Ravn. Drury, though, responded with a 7-1 lead to close the first quarter with the Ichabods trailing, 13-10.
After
Alyxis Bowens hit a layup at 9:41 in the second, two quick three-pointers from the Drury offense in the opening two minutes of the period saw Washburn fall behind by seven, 19-12. WU cut the lead to five (21-16) off a jumper from
Erin Dohnalek at 7:26, but another quick burst from the Lady Panthers made it a 10-point game (26-16) near the five-minute mark. The teams played relatively even the rest of the half and sent Washburn to the locker room down, 31-24.
WU fell behind by as many as 19 in the third quarter after seven unanswered from the Lady Panthers, and trailed by 18 (53-35) headed for the fourth. The Ichabods opened the final frame on an 8-2 run that cut the lead to 12 with 5:37 to go, 55-43, but that was as close as Washburn could come the rest of the way.
Jayna Smith finished with eight points and seven rebounds to lead the team, as Lane had seven points. Bowens finished with five rebounds and five points, and Dohanlek,
Felisha Gibbs and
Haley Pfau each had six points.
Jharian Bowen's three assists was a team-high.
Washburn continues its road trip in Florida next week over the Thanksgiving break, traveling to No. 4 Nova Southeastern on Friday, Nov. 27 and Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, Nov. 28.
