ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 1-1 on day two of the MWSU Regional Invitational falling 4-3 before coming back in the nightcap with a 3-0 non-conference win over Missouri Southern. The Ichabods will wrap up the event with games on Sunday with Augustana at 9 a.m. and Concordia-St. Paul at 1 p.m.
Game 1 - Wayne State 4, Washburn 3The Washburn Ichabods took a 2-0 lead after their first at bat when
Kristen Bell driving in one with a single as the Ichabods took advantage of a Wildcat error. Wayne State came back to tie the score at 2-2 with solo runs in the first and second innings.
Megan Stegman's leadoff home run in the top of the fourth gave Washburn a 3-2 lead but the Wildcats came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth going up 4-3. The Ichabods could not get any runners on base in the seventh as the Wildcats hung on for the win.
Jordan Erickson and Stegman each had two hits.
Game 2 - Washburn 3, Missouri Southern 0The Ichabods (16-9) and Lions (5-17) were scoreless until the bottom of the third when Washburn scored all the runs in the game.
Cassidy Merriman collected a two-out single driving
Marina Quimby who singled.
Lauren Thimmesch then hit a 2-run homer putting the Ichabods up 3-0. The three runs were all the offense would need as
Kimberly Euler and
Samantha Carson would need as Euler pitched four innings without giving up a hit and Carson came in the game in relief picking up the save pitching three innings allowing a hit and striking out four for the combined shutout. Quimby finished with two hits in the game as the Ichabods out hit the Lions 5 to 1. The Lions will come to Topeka next weekend for a MIAA doubleheader.
