TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split an MIAA doubleheader with Missouri Southern winning the opener 12-4 in five innings and falling in the nightcap 5-3. The Ichabods will host Pittsburg State at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Washburn Softball Complex.
Game 1 - Washburn 12, Missouri Southern 4 (5 innings)The Washburn Ichabods used a seven-run first inning to propel themselves to a 12-4 win over the Lions in the opening game. The Ichabods chased Lions starter Ashley Lutz without recording an our as starting pitcher
Lauren Thimmesch improved to 12-2 on the season in the circle after giong 3 for 4 with 4 RBI and two runs scored. She hit a three-run homer in the first inning and
Savannah Moore hit a grand slam staking Washburn to the early 7-0 lead.
The Lions came back four runs in the top of the fourth on a grand slam by Sarah Williams. Washburn added a solo run in the fourth inning when a
Kristen Bell single scored
Jordan Erickson who singled earlier in the inning.
Washburn wrapped up the game in the fifth inning scoring four runs. Erickson, Thimmesch and Bell all had RBI singles as all four runs came with two outs.
Quimby and Thimmesch each had three hits and Erickson scored three times.
Game 2 - Missouri Southern 5, Washburn 3THe Ichabods scored three in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Ichabods lost 5-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. The Ichabods were held scoreless until the final frame. All five of the Lions came on two hits with a two-run and three-run homer in the first and fourth innings.
Megan Stegman and
Jordan Erickson each had two hits for Washburn.
Taylor Kemp took the loss giving up five earned runs.
Marina Quimby pitched four innings of scoreless relief striking out five.
