TOPEKA, Kan. -- THe Washburn Ichabod picked up an MIAA doubleheader sweep over Nebraska-Kearney winning 9-3 and 8-0 in five innings on Friday at the Washburn Softball Complex. The Ichabods will wrap up the home slate against Fort Hays State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game 1 - Washburn 9, Nebraska-Kearney 3
The Lopers took the early lead in the third inning before the Ichabods came back with three in bottom of the frame with a pair of home runs by
Jordan Erickson with a 2-run shot to left center. With two out,
Taylor Zimmerman hit a solo homer to left putting Washburn up 3-1.
In the fourth, the Lopers tied the score on a 2-run homer by pitcher Cassie Roessing.
The Ichabods broke the game open in the sixth inning sending nine batters to the plate.
Megan Stegman drove in Zimmerman with a double to center and then
Marina Quimby drove in
Sierra Kemp and Stegman with a single to right. Quimby scored on a double by
Cassidy Merriman to left field and then Erickson cleared the bases with her second home of the game to center stretching the Ichabod lead to 9-3.
Lauren Thimmesch recorded her 15th win of the season striking out three scattering eight hits. Erickson recorded 4 RBI going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Quimby drove in two.
Game 2 - Washburn 8, UNK 0 (5 innings)
Taylor Kemp tossed her first career shutout at Washburn as the Ichabods (22-17, 10-8 MIAA) completed the sweep over the Lopers (12-25, 10-25 MIAA).Â
Washburn scored three in the bottom of the first. Thimmesch drove in
Cassidy Merriman who doubled and then
Kristen Bell drove in two as Erickson and Thimmesch came around to score on a single to center after they moved up on a sac bunt by
Haylee Marsteller.
The Ichabods scored two unearned runs in the second on a 2-RBI double by Thimmesch scoring Quimby and Merriman staking the Ichabods to a 5-0 lead.
Washburn added two more in the fourth on a 2-run home run by
Megan Stegman and in the seventh Zimmerman scored the final run on an error by the Lopers giving Washburn the 8-0 win.
Kemp allowed four hits striking out one throwing 64 hits.
