ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team split an MIAA doubleheader winning game one 4-3 over Missouri Western in nine innings and falling 9-4 in the nightcap. Washburn will wrap up the regular season at Northwest Missouri on Sunday before opening the MIAA Tournament on April 30th in Overland Park.
Game 1 - WU 4, MWSU 3 (9 innings)Lauren Thimmesch hit a go ahead home run in the top of the ninth and picked up her 20th win of the season in a 4-3 win over the Griffons.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when
Jordan Erickson drove home
Marina Quimby with a sac fly. Quimby led off the inning with a double to center.Â
The Griffons took advantage of an Ichabod error and scored three runs with two earned taking a 3-1 lead.
In the seventh, Quimby led off the inning with a home run to left and a
Haylee Marsteller sac fly scored
Cassidy Merriman tying the score at 3-3.
Neither team scored until Thimmesch's 14th home run of the season.
Thimmesch finished 4 for 5 with an RBI on the home run. Quimby was 3 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI.Â
Game 2 - MWSU 9, WU 4The Ichabods (27-20, 14-10 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by
Taylor Zimmerman, but the Griffons (33-15, 17-7 MIAA) would take a 2-1 lead as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second.
The Ichabods tied the score when Merriman drove in
Megan Stegman who singled.
In the third the Griffons scored four times taking a 6-2 lead and in the fourth Missouri Western added another run going up 7-2.
Thimmesch drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh a a 2 RBI single scoring Quimby and
Savannah Moore but the Ichabods would not get any closer in the 9-4 loss.
The Griffons added a pair of runs in the sixth to go up 9-2.
Samantha Carson took the loss in the circle for the Ichabods. Quimby had four hits as did Stegman.
