No. 7 Washburn closes GAC/MIAA Crossover with 3-1 win over Southern Nazarene

RUSSELLVILLE, Kan. – No. 7 Washburn Volleyball closed the GAC/MIAA Crossover with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-12, 22-25, 25-14) win over Southern Nazarene on Saturday, Sept. 19.

WU (11-0) finished invitational play for the 2015 campaign undefeated, knocking off Arkansas Tech and Harding as well at the weekend's event.

Washburn led by two several times early in the first set, but at 12-all, started back and forth play with SNU that kept things close until 16-16, when a kill from Leanna Willer provided the Ichabods with another two-point separation, 19-17.  The Crimson Storm again tied it at 19, but back-to-back kills from Taylor Selk and Sarah Vicory was the opening of a 6-1 run that closed the set in Washburn's favor, 25-20.

Trailing 5-4 in the second, a 5-1 run gave Washburn the breathing room it needed to pull away in the second set.  WU grew its lead to seven (17-10), and after SNU cut the lead to five (17-12), a kill from Selk was the first point in an 8-0 run to close the set, 25-12 and give the Ichabods a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Tied at 12-12 in the third, four straight for the Ichabods put WU in position for the sweep, leading 17-13 past the midway point of the set.  SNU climbed back to take a 21-18 lead, however, with seven unanswered as part of a 9-1 run to make it 23-19.  WU charged late with three quick points, but ultimately couldn't complete the comeback as SNU took the set, 25-22.

WU jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the fourth set and controlled things throughout.  Up 16-10, a 5-0 run for the Ichabods put Washburn within four points of match point at 21-10.  The teams matched points from there as WU won, 25-14.

Willer hit .314 with 19 kills and 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the season, while Selk just missed double digits with nien kills.  Paige Regnier had seven kills and six digs, while Carley Swan (four kills) and Sarah Vicory (six kills) each have five blocks.

Liz Powell had a double-double with 25 assists (team-high) and 15 digs, second on the team behind Alyssa Carney, who had 17 digs and nine assists.  Natalie Bates had a double-double with 10 digs and 10 assists as well.
