Ichabod men's basketball team rallies for win at Central Missouri

WARRENSBUG, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods held off two potential game-tying shots in the final three seconds as the Ichabods rallied from 14 points down as they picked up a 58-56 win over Central Missouri on Wednesday night.

While holding a 58-55 lead with 12 seconds to play, Washburn (12-6, 8-5 MIAA) fouled the Mules (12-7, 6-7 MIAA) sending them to the free throw line. The Mules' Brad Woodson hit the first free throw and Reaves grabbed the rebound but his game-tying layup missed and Marquiez Lawrence's offensive tip at the buzzer missed as the Ichabods held off Central Missouri for the win.

In the first half, the Mules were on fire from deep hitting 7 of 16 shots from 3-point range going 12 of 27 from the field overall. The Mules built a lead of as many as 11 points at 29-18 with 4:20 to play in the first half before the Ichabods finished the opening stanza on a 10-2 run over the final 3:46 cutting the margin to three at 31-28 at the break.

Coming out of the locker room, the Mules ripped off a 12-2 run over the next 3:44 buidling their lead back to 13 at 43-30 with 16:45 to play.

Washburn came back with a 15-4 run of its own cutting the Mules' lead to two at 47-45 with 6:37 to play in the game on a dunk by Brady Skeens.

Neither team would score until the 4:22 mark when Randall Smith tied the score at 47 with a layup. A jumper by Spencer Reaves 30 seconds later put the Mules back up two.

After the Mules missed a pair of free throws, Skeens pu the Ichabods up 51-49 with 2:42 to go in the game. On the Mules' next possession, Reaves hit both free throws tying the score at 51 with 2:23 to go in the game.

Andy Wilson hit a deep 3-pointer with 2:04 to go stretching the lead to 54-51 off an assist by Christian Ulsaker. The Mules came up empty on their next trip down the court and after a foul by the Mules, Skeens hit both free throws stretching the lead up to five at 56-51 with 1:38 to play.

The Mules came up with a swipe and a bucket with 58 seconds to play as Tereke Eckwood scored cutting the Ichabod advantage back to three.

A layup with 39 seconds to play by Reaves trimmed back the Ichabod lead to one at 56-55, but Smith pushed Washburn's lead back to three with 12 seconds left with a layup leading to the Ichabods fouling up three with three seconds to play.

Smith led the Ichabods with 16 points going 7 of 9 from the field while Skeens recorded his sixth double double of the season and second straight with 14 points and 11 rebounds adding three blocks. Skeens played all 20 minutes of the second half scoring 10 points with eight rebounds. WIlson finished with 10 points hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Reaves led the Mules with 18 points.

Washburn outrebounded the Mules 43 to 32 including 12 offensive rebounds to nine. Washburn also turned 17 Mule turnovers into 16 points. Washburn was 11 of 18 from the free throw line while the Mules were 3 of 11 overall going 3 of 9 in the second half.

Washburn returns to the road on Saturday at Southwest Baptist.
