Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn soccer team remains perfect at home after a down to the wire 2-1 win over MIAA foe Missouri Southern at Yager Stadium Friday evening.
The Ichabods got off to a slow start allowing Missouri Southern to score at the six minute mark off of a corner kick for an early lead. That is all it took for the Ichabods to awaken and put their aggressive style of offense on display. It was inside the 22
nd minute that
Kelly Schunk would attempt the first of five corner kicks for Washburn. The ball would sail to the middle of the box connecting with
Ellie Karloff to hit the back of the net for Karloffs first goal of the season and first of her career. Both teams would head into the half tied 1-1.
Washburn would continue its attack at the start of the second half attempting two shots less than two minutes into the second period. As time dwindled down Karloff would be the one to head to the corner for the Ichabods fifth corner kick of the evening inside the 87
th minute. The ball would skyrocket to the middle of the box connecting with
Mackenzie Heiman before hitting the back of the net to give Washburn a 2-1 lead and its fifth home win of the season.
"Overall the game started out slow for us, but we responded after the goal and settle down and played our style of soccer", said head coach
Chris Jones. "We created good opportunities in the second half especially, the ball just wouldn't bounce the right way. Mackenzie scoring late was huge for her and for us. That's why we have a never give up mentality. Credit to Southern, they are a good team and caused us trouble the whole game. We played how we normally play and we got the win because of it".
Kaitline Minnich played every minute in goal for Washburn racking up four saves to improve to 5-3-1 on the season. The Ichabods improve to 6-4-1 and MSSU drops to 3-6-1.
Up next, Washburn will go for its sixth home win of the season when it faces Southwest Baptist on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Ichabods will host its annual TopSoccer event at halftime of the match.
