SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --- Paced by the double-figure scoring of
Felisha Gibbs,
Reagan Phelan,
Alyxis Bowens and
Makayla Vargo the Washburn women's basketball team improved to 3-2 on the season with a 62-50 win over Kutztown (1-5) in the Puerto Rico Invitational.
Gibbs led the way for the Ichabods with 13 points as she went 6-for-6 from the field and 1 of 2 from the line. Phelan followed with 11 points and tallied season-high seven rebounds while Bowens finished with a rebound shy of a double-double as she collected 10 points and a game-best nine boards. Vargo had a pair of career-best with 10 points and three assists.
Erika Lane also has a strong performance with nine points, five assists and eight rebounds.
Washburn took control of the game from the onset and never looked back as it led the Golden Bears 26-19 at the break.
During the opening half, the Ichabods controlled the glass at both ends of the floor as they outrebounded Kutztown 24-10. Washburn also built its seven point advantage in part behind efficient shooting as it converted on 10 of 24 chances, good for 41.7 percent from the floor.
The Ichabods maintained their advantage into the second half bettering their shooting to 51.9 percent while pulling down 21 of 30 rebounds.
Washburn eventually opened an 18-point margin early in the fourth for its largest lead of the game after pushing the score to 52-34. The Golden Bears tried to rally late as they outscored WU 16-10 for the remainder of the contest but the effort fell short as the Ichabods held its double-digit lead en route to a 62-50 victory.
The Ichabods will wrap up their Caribbean adventure on Saturday against Puerto Rico-Bayamon with tip-off slated for 8 a.m. Central.
