SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabod men's tennis team snapped a 13-game losing streak to Drury as the Ichabods took down the No. 15-ranked Panthers 5-4 on Friday night in their spring opener. The win by the Ichabods was the first since the 1997 season in the first meeting between the two squads.Â
The Ichabods clinched the match at No. 6 singles when
Dario Munoz-Poletti topped Trevor Bachus 6-0, 6-1 wrapping up the victory for Washburn, who improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Ichabods led 2-1 after doubles after the No. 22-ranked doubles team of
Blake Hunter and
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza defeated the No. 4-nationally-ranked team of Maximilliam Hepp and Kay Bartmann 9-8 winning the tie-breaker 11-9. It was a rematch of the ITA Central Regional doubles championship which went to the Panthers in the fall.
Washburn's other point came at No. 3 singles when
Trey Horton and
Brett White beat Trevor Bachus and Damien Minguez 8-5.
In singles play, Hunter picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sacha Mourier and then
Will Agritelley beat Minguez 6-0, 6-3 before Munoz-Poletti slammed the door on a Panther comeback with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bachus.
Washburn will return to the court on Saturday when they will face McKendree in Springfield.
