ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 36-ranked Washburn Ichabod tennis team outlasted Oklahoma Baptist 5-4 in the first off three matches in Orlando. Washburn also climbed to No. 4 in the latest
ITA Central Regional Rankings which were also released on Wednesday.
Washburn improved to 5-2 on the season with the win as
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza won the deciding match at No. 1 singles topping Daniel Aguilera 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 clinching the win. Washburn also had wins at No. 3 singles when
Blake Hunter defeated Michael Vetter 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 and
Dario Munoz-Poletti topped Babji Atturu 6-2, 6-1.
The Ichabods won two of three doubles matches jumping out to the 2-1 lead entering singles. Hunter and Valarezo Plaza won their match at No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Aguilera and Thomas Ackerknecht and
Matt Barlow and
Zach Hampton beat Vetter and Lucas Castelo Branco 8-2.
Washburn is back in action on Thursday when they will battle St. Thomas Aquinas (NY) at 8:30 CST.
