TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and didn't look back as they defeated Emporia State 6-3 on Wednesday at the Washburn Tennis Complex. Washburn returns to action on March 26 at Lindenwood.

Jodie Blackim and Ally Burr picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Tawni Griffey and Amy Fugit and then Gwen Shepler and Maggie Plum topped Kaley Clark and Lori Ahuja 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. The No. 3 team of MaKenna Gonzales and Laura Shkembi beat Kristen and Kayla Fraley 8-4.

In singles, Washburn won matches at Nos. 4-6 to clinch the 6-3 win. Jennifer Krause topped Ahuja 6-1, 6-2 and Holly Johnston won her match 6-3, 6-3 over Kristen Fraley at No. 5 singles. Shepler picked up the sixth point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kayla Fraley.

Washburn improved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA while the Hornets fell to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in league matches.
