Ichabods blanked by Kansas State in exhibition

8/16/2016 11:17:00 AM

MANHATTAN. Kan.- The Washburn women's soccer team opened its 2016 season with a 5-0 loss at Kansas State in exhibition action in Manhattan on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats held a 2-0, lead at the break after scoring goals in the 23rd and 29th minutes and outshooting the Ichabods 10 to 3, during the half.  The Ichabods were never able to gain any momentum as Kansas State scored three more goals after the break in the 53rd, 56th, and 73rd minutes.

"We came here to test our ability a little bit", said head coach Chris Jones. "This is technically our fourth practice of the season and we were really going in with no expectations. I think we did a lot of good things and took a lot of positives away from the game. Obviously there are some growing pains and stuff that we need to work on gearing up for the season and MIAA and region play. I think for the most part we moved the ball really well and I was impressed with the way we played."

Kaitlin Minnich and Riley Trent split time in goal for the Ichabods.  Minnich played 67:56, recording four saves on four attempts. Trent made her freshman debut, playing 22:04 in goal and recording two saves on one attempt.

The Wildcats held a shot advantage of 22-3 and an 11-1, advantage in shots on goal.

Ellie Karloff attempted the only shot on goal for the Ichabods.

The Ichabods return to action opening the regular season on Sept. 1 when they travel to Minnesota to face Upper Iowa with kick-off slated for 2 p.m.
