Ichabods Blank Newman in Non-Conference Finale

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Washburn Soccer closed out its non-conference slate with a 1-0 win over Newman Sunday afternoon in Wichita, Kan.
 
The Ichabods stellar defensive efforts led to both teams ending the first period scoreless. The Washburn offense continued its relentless attacking efforts from Friday's win by outshooting the Jets 5-2 in the first half , including 2-1 in shots on goal.
 
In the second half, Washburn continued to attack the Newman defense, maintaining possession for over half of the match.  In the 85th minute the Ichabods efforts paid off when Emily Stauffer scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Kate Combs. Washburn held on for five more minutes eventually earning its second win of the season.
 
"I thought the team played well as a whole" said head coach Chris Jones. "Emily had a great finish. She showed great awareness to turn toward the box and finish.  Kate Combs did great work to put the backline under pressure and play the ball off their outside back. We executed what we wanted to do very well as a team".
 
Washburn outshot the Jets 11-2 overall and 2-1 in shots on goal. Emily Stauffer earned her first career game-winning goal and now leads the Ichabods with two goals on the season.  Riley Boomer played every minute in goal for the Ichabods earning the first win of her career.
 
The Ichabods are now 2-2-0 on the season and will next return to the pitch on Sept. 16 to open MIAA play against Emporia State in Emporia, Kan.
