Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The Ichabod soccer team took it down to the wire in a 1-0 win by way of a 84
th minute header from
Lexi Barton over Fort Hays State Friday evening at Yager Stadium.
In a stellar defensive showing the Ichabods held Fort Hays State to one shot in the first half. Washburn used its signature aggressive style of play to outshoot the Tigers 5-1 in the opening frame, ultimately going into the break deadlocked.
Washburn continued to hold off attempts by the Fort Hays State offense in the second period.
Kaitlin Minnich played every minute in goal for the Ichabods, holding off a barrage of shots attempts from the Tiger offense recording four saves on 8 shot attempts.
As time dwindled down the Ichabods packed the box for a corner kick in the 84
th minute.
Lexi Barton headed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and first of her career. Washburn would hold the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the match earning its fourth win of the season.
"The game itself was very intense and we rose to the challenge of playing a very good team and coming away with a good result", said head coach
Chris Jones. " Credit to Fort Hays, they are a good team. We played well against them and showed that if we work hard and play within ourselves we can come away with a result like this against anyone".
Washburn soccer will host its second home game of the weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it host Nebraska-Kearney for its first conference matchup of the season.
