Ichabods Conclude Perfect Week With 1-0 Shutout Over Nebraska-Kearney

9/25/2016 5:06:00 PM

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – In its fourth match in seven days the Ichabods showed no signs of weariness in a 1-0 shutout over Nebraska- Kearney Sunday afternoon in Yager Stadium.

Washburn put on an impressive defensive effort in its conference opener, holding the Lopers to two shots on goal one of which came in the 17th minute. Nebraska-Kearney outshot Washburn 4-2 in the first period but the Ichabods would hold on and force both teams to go into the break scoreless.

Although they were outshot in the first period, Washburn once again showed its ability to share the ball with eight Ichabods recording shots during the match. Washburn would maintain possession for a large portion of the second period and it paid off at the 73rd minute mark. Olivia Stovall would cut to the right side of the field and launch a 25-foot shot to the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Ichabods would hold on for the final 15 minutes to remain perfect at home.

"It was a hard fought win," said head coach Chris Jones. " It was a tale of two halves. We weren't ourselves in the first half, but after halftime we got back to what we do best and we got the best result. Kearney made us earn it, but everyone is stepping up to help the team through those tough games and its awesome to see that. A perfect week is great, but it's behind us now and we need to focus on the two tough games coming up. It's all about looking forward and getting better this week".

Kaitlin Minnich played every minute in goal for the Ichabods posting two saves and earning her third win of the season.

Washburn soccer moves to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play. Up next, the Ichabods will travel to Oklahoma to face Central Oklahoma Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. and Northeastern State Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
