Women's Soccer falls 1-0 to Northeastern State

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team fell for its second consecutive loss Sunday, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Northeastern State University.

The Ichabods' offense was stifled by the RiverHawks, being shut out for the first time this season. They finished tied for a season low in shots, and had their second fewest shots on goal in any game this year.

The RiverHawks broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute, when Jessie Lynch received a corner kick from Sarah Rector and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich.

The Ichabods held an advantage on corner kicks in the first half, 4-2, but were unable to capitalize on any of them. They were held to just four shots in the half, two on goal.

The offense of Washburn was held up even more in the second half, mustering just two shots. The last, by Tera Lynch, was saved by NSU goalkeeper Meg Smith in the 88th minute.

With the loss, the Ichabods fall to 1-2-0 in MIAA action, 5-4-1 overall. The next game for Washburn will be against Missouri Southern State University, who won its first match of the season Sunday in a 1-0 victory over Northwest Missouri State University. The Ichabods will take the field at 6 p.m. Sunday in Joplin, Missouri.
