ROME, Ga. --The Washburn men's tennis team concluded its fall season Saturday with top-five finishes in both singles and doubles competition at the ITA Oracle Cup, the national tournament for Division II players.
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza finished his fall season with a 14-5 record and a fourth-place finish in the men's singles tournament. He fell in two sets to Grinberg of Saint Leo University, 6-0, 7-5. In a close second set, Valarezo Plaza started the set up 2-0, before Grinberg tied it up at 2-2. There were three more ties in the set at 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5 before Grinberg took the last two points to win the third-place match.
In the fifth-place doubles match, Valarezo Plaza and
Blake Hunter took down Drury University's Sebastien Amato and Grega Kokalj straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The team of Hunter and Valarezo Plaza lost only one match in the fall season, in the first round of the Oracle Cup. They finish with a record of 15-1 for the fall.
