TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn volleyball capped its six-match home stand on Saturday afternoon in winning fashion sweeping Missouri Southern, 3-0. The Ichabods, which closed the home swing at 4-2, climbed to 14-7 on the season and 5-4 in the MIAA.
The Washburn defense was stout in its effort holding the Lions' attack to sub-.100 hitting in during each set as they finishing with a mark of .070. The offense was equally as strong as it hit .207 for the match.
Missouri Southern took an early 2-0 lead to open the match before Washburn surged back with five unanswered. Missouri Southern reclaimed the lead at 12-11 behind a 4-0 run but that would be its last lead of the set as the Ichabods closed out the set with a a 14-5 run to win 25-17.
Genna Berg paced the Ichabod attack with five of her match-best 11 kills. Washburn meanwhile hit .294 during the opening set.
Washburn grabbed an advantage and never looked back despite the Lions forcing five ties during the second set. After a series of tic-tac rallies pushed the score to 9-8, Washburn widen the margin to 12-8 thanks to a 3-0 spurt as
Taylor Selk buried one of her five kills of the afternoon. Leading 15-12, Washburn flirted with a double-figure advantage as went on an 8-2 run to push the lead to 23-14. Missouri SOuthern did not relinquish the set peacefully however as a 9-1 run pulled it within one at 24-23. Washburn however escaped with set point as a kill from
Makayla Maxwell however stopped the rally to give the Ichabods a 25-23 victory.
Makayla finished the match with seven kills while also posting four digs and two blocks.
The Ichabods built themselves an 8-6 advantage to begin the third before MSSU strung together four unanswered to tak a 10-8 lead. Washburn then led 15-11 thanks to 7-1 run including five straight. A 3-0 spurt allowed Missouri Western to trim the lead to one down the stretch, 22-21, but that was the closest it came as
Erica Montgomery put away two of her six kills allowing the Ichabods to complete the sweep with a 25-22 set win.
Faith Rottinghaus led all players with 17 digs.
Allison Maxwell finished with five kills and a match-best seven blocks.
Allison Sadler's 30-assist performance meanwhile pushed her season total to 616 and elavated her to No. 19 on the Washburn career assist list.Â
Washburn will look to for its third-straight when it returns to the road with a trip to Northwest Missouri on Friday, Oct. 20.
