This past week, the women's soccer team split two matches, falling to Missouri Western State University Friday before defeating Northwest Missouri State University Sunday. The Ichabods will have a chance to eclipse last season's win total in the final week of the regular season, as they take on Emporia State University and Fort Hays State.
The Ichabods were shut out for the second time this season at the hands of the now 14-2-0 Griffons on Friday. Bridget Blessie scored the lone goal of the match in the 13th minute, off of a free kick by Madeline Cowell.
The Ichabods had a tough time getting shots off, totaling six for the entire match.
Olivia Grasso and
Paige Swanson had the only two shots on goal for Washburn in the match, Grasso's in the 17th minute and Swanson's in the 63rd minute.
The defense for the Ichabods was stout, save for the lone goal. The Griffons had eight shots total, just two of them on goal. The Ichabods and Griffons were even on corner kicks for the match with six apiece.
Sunday's victory over the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri came behind a strong first-half performance.
The Ichabods scored both of their goals in the first 10 minutes of action as
Kelsi Smith netted the first goal on an assist from
Emily Stauffer in the sixth minute, and
Kelly Schunk followed right after with a long free kick goal in the tenth minute.
The Ichabods went into halftime up 2-0, having amassed eight shots compared to the Bearcats' three.
In the second half, the Ichabods held tight behind goalkeeper
Kaitlin Minnich's strong outing, but gave up a goal in the 73rd minute as Lizzy Romano took a lead pass from Natasha Samudzi and scored the Bearcats' first goal of the match. Minnich allowed one goal, but had nine saves, bringing her season total to 83.
With just 13 seconds left in the game, the Bearcats had a free kick opportunity from 40 yards out, and almost scored if not for Minnich's leaping save to send the ball over the goal.
The Ichabods will have a chance to avenge an early-season loss to the Hornets Friday, before attempting to sweep the Tigers Sunday in the 'Bods regular-season finale.
