WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The Washburn women's soccer season ended Friday with a 1-0 loss to Missouri Western State University in the MIAA semifinals.
Bridget Blessie scored for the Griffons with just 12 seconds left in the first half, and the Ichabods were unable to respond in the second half. Goalkeeper
Kaitlin Minnich made four saves in the match, as just five of the Griffons' 21 shots were on goal.
The Ichabods had a tough time offensively, as they were held without a corner kick for the match. Of the Ichabods' 13 shots, four were on goal, and their last shot on goal came in the 67th minute by
Emily Stauffer.
Mackenzie Heiman,
Kelsi Smith and
Kati Sneegas were the others with shots on goal for the match.
Blessie's goal was her second against the Ichabods for the season, as in the teams' first matchup, she was the only goal scorer in the Griffons' 1-0 victory on October 20.
With the loss, the Ichabods finish with a record of 10-9-1, the most victories for the program since 2009. It was also the first time the Ichabods advanced in an MIAA Tournament match since 2013, when they surpassed the University of Nebraska at Kearney on penalty kicks.
The Griffons will go on to face the No. 1 nationally ranked University of Central Missouri, who shut out Fort Hays State University 3-0 in the other semifinal match Friday.
