Women's Hoops rekindle rivalry with Emporia State on Valentine's Day at Lee Arena

Washburn and Emporia State square off in 99th all-time meeting

Tipping Off
Washburn looks to build off its positive momentum last week that resulted in a pair of wins as it welcomes No. 11 Emporia State on Tuesday to Schendel Court at Lee Arena. The match-up will be the 99th meeting between the rivals with ESU leading the all-time series 53-44. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. tip.


Scouting the Hornets
Emporia State comes to Lee Arena at 20-4 overall and 11-4 in the MIAA standings where they currently tied for third with Central Oklahoma ... the Lady Hornets are coming off a 68-59 loss to Missouri Western ... Kelly Moten's 18.4 ppg is second-best in the MIAA and 23rd in Division II ... Emporia tops the national ranking in rebound margin (+14.3) while also ranking in the Top 15 nationally in blocks (2nd/139), blocks per game (3rd/6.0), free throws made (11th/392), rebounds per game (12th/45) and scoring offense (9th/80.7) ... the Lady Hornets shoot 43.6 percent from the field and 36.3 from 3-point distance ... opponents are shoot 35.9 percent from the floor and are held to 28.3 from long range.


Player Quick Facts
• Senior guard Erika Lane leads the team in assists (3.6/gm) and minutes (32.8/game) ... Lane is also third in scoring (10.5 ppg) ... team's second leading rebounder (4.8/game) - surpassed personal single-season rebound mark of 102 on Feb. 4, currently stands at 116 on the year.
• Lane has scored double-digit points 14 times and dished three more assists on 16 occasions ... on Jan. 12 she tallied her first career double-double (10 pts, 10 rebs).
• Lane ranks sixth in the MIAA with 87 total assists, seventh in assists/game and 10th in assist-turnover ratio (1.3).

• Bowens has reached double-digit scoring 16 times ... paces WU in rebounds with 171, surpassing her single-season mark of 158 set last year.
• Bowens ranks third among league leaders in total blocks (38) and blocks/game (1.6) and is listed nationally at 47th and 56th, respectively.
• Senior guard Jharian Bowen is the team's second leading scorer with 11.3 ppg ... has reached double-figure points 17 times this season including a career-high of 20 against on Jan. 2.
• Bowen is seventh in the MIAA with 46 made 3-pointers and is shooting 37.1 percent from distance ... places second on team in FT percentage, 78.3.
• Senior forward Erin Dohnalek is fifth on the team in scoring with 9.4 ppg ... also averages 1.8 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
• Dohnalek is shooting 71.9 from the charity stripe.
• Dohnalek has been red hot shooting of late with double-figure contributions in five of her last seven games ... she has reached double-digit scoring 13 times including a career-high of 18 points on Jan. 26.

Washburn has enjoyed playing at Schendel Court at Lee Arena this season where they have posted an 9-4 record ... at home, the Ichabods average 72.1 points a game with a scoring margin of +12.3 ... The comforts of home extend to shooting where the 'Bods are good for 45.2 percent from the field and have been able to hold opponents to a mark of 37.6 ... Individually, Alyxis Bowens (11.9), Erika Lane (11.6), Reagan Phelan (11.5) and Jharian Bowen (10.9) have thrived as they average double-figure points while in front of the home crowd ... Through 13 home dates, the Ichabods have welcomed 18,006 fans to Schendel Court at Lee Arena including a season-high 2,784 against Fort Hays on Feb. 4.


'Bods on Valentine's Day
Washburn is 11-4 all-time when playing on Valentine's Day ... WU's last game on Valentine's Day came during the 2014-15 season when they defeated Northeastern State (83-58) ... the Ichabods and Emporia State have met twice over the course of the previous 98th meetings with WU winning both times.

Washburn's Ron McHenry is in his 17th season with the Ichabods ... during his first 16 season McHenry has amassed a 389-108 record ... was named the fifth coach in program-history in 2000 ... his .783 winning percentage to start the 2016-17 season is the best by any coach to lead the Ichabods/Lady Blues ... the mark is also 17th-best for active NCAA women's basketball coaches across all divisions and 23rd all-time ... amongst the Division II ranks, McHenry's winning percentage is fourth-best for active coaches and fifth-best all-time, while his 389 victories to open the season placed him 23rd for active coaches in Division II ... McHenry has 12 seasons with 20 or more wins and three seasons topping 30 ... in his first 16 years, McHenry has  coached 21 All-American selections, 42 All-MIAA nominees and one WNBA draft pick ... during the 2004-05 campaign McHenry steered the program to an NCAA Division II title ... McHenry has a combined 15 MIAA regular-season and tournament championships ... the Ichabod bench boss entered the season 11 wins shy of 400 ... on Jan. 12, 2017, McHenry became the fastest active coach in NCAA Division II women's basketball to reach 400 career wins while joining a list with 23 of his peers ... Last Time Out 
Emporia State 75, Washburn 49 • Jan. 7, 2017

EMPORIA, Kan. --- A slow start doomed the Washburn women's basketball which fell, 75-49, Saturday at White Auditorium to No. 2 Emporia State (13-1, 4-1 MIAA). With the loss, WU slipped to 10-4 on the season and 3-2 in league play ... Washburn was led by Erin Dohanlek who finished with 13 points, while fellow seniors Alyxis Bowens and Erika Lane also netted double-figures with 12 and 10 respectively. Bowens pulled down a team-best six rebounds with Lane distributed team-high four assists ... A rough opening period put the Ichabods behind early as Emporia State took control with a 15-0 run during the opening 3:42. The run was snapped with a layup from Dohanlek, but that provide little reprieve as Emporia State went on to take a 22-8 advantage into the second ... Even though pieces came together a bit for WU in the second as it saw its field-goal shooting rose from 36.4 to 50 percent, ESU remained outfront as it pushed the score to 44-24 heading into the break ... The Ichabods continued to stumble the rest of the way as they converted 9 of 26 attempts from the floor, for 34.6 percent shooting and were outscored 31-25.


'Bods History
The 2016-17 marks the 48th season of Washburn women's basketball ... the Ichabods are 887-399-1 all-time ... the program has seen 23 seasons with at least 20 wins and had made 17 trips to the NCAA Division II Championship ... in 2004-05 Washburn won the NCAA Division II Championship and finished the season 35-2.
