TOPEKA, Kan. -- The 36
th- ranked Ichabod men's tennis team kept its winning streak alive with a 9-0 win over Bethany College in its home opener at the Topeka Country Club.
Washburn laid its claim to all three doubles points to take an early lead.
Blake Hunter and
Alejandro Valarezo kicked things off when the duo downed Aaron Moses and Juan Mateus, 8-3.
Tommy Hunter and
Matt Barlow cruised to an 8-3 win over Edward Sengai and Conrad Mascarenhas. A come-from-behind win from
Chase Brill and
Paul Haase would be the highlight of doubles play. After trailing 2-3 early in the match, the Ichabod duo would go on a 3-1 run, taking a 5-4 lead before winning clinching the third and final doubles point 8-4.
With a 3-0 lead in tow,
Matt Barlow would come through with a 6-2, 6-1 win for the Ichabods at No. 3 singles to put the Ichabods up 4-0 over the Swedes.
Blake Hunter clinched the match for Washburn when he ousted Teodor Antelija in straight-sets 6-3, 6-2.
Valarezo dug deep in a thriller to put Washburn up 6-0 over Bethany College. After edging out a 7-5 win over Mateus, the Ichabod netter would drop the second set 6-4 forcing a tie-break. After getting out to an early lead the sophomore eventually picked up his fourth-consecutive singles win 7-5, 4-6 (10-6).
Haase closed out a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alvaro Rengifo to put Washburn, before
Tommy Hunter would pick up a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 win over Sengai.
After dropping the first set by two tie breaks,
Chase Brill battle back in his second thriller of the evening to beat Mascarenhas 6-7, 7-5,10-6.
Washburn improves to 5-1 on the season and will return to action on March 1 when it takes on William Woods (Mo)
