SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The 28
th-ranked Washburn men's tennis team stumbled in a 6-3 loss to No. 38 Drury Friday evening at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
After taking an early 2-1 lead heading into singles play Washburn was unable to capitalize in key moments down the stretch and picked up its first loss of the season.
Playing for the first time together
Matt Barlow and
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza were defeated by the Drury duo of Maxi Hepp and Sebastion Amato in an 8-4 decision. Brother's Tommy and
Blake Hunter made their doubles debut by picking up a convincing 8-4 win over Sachan Mourier and Nico Sigloch.
Paul Haase and
Chase Brill clinched the Ichabods second doubles victory of the evening with an impressive 8-3 win over Nico Hapeler and Paul Porcher.
31-ranked
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza would pick up the final point of the dual for Washburn after downing Drury's Maxi Hepp in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Drury would win the five remaining singles matches and come away with a 6-3 victory over the Ichabods.
Washburn falls to 2-1 on the season, while Drury improves to 1-0. The Ichabods will return to the court tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. to face McKendree.
