KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Washburn men's tennis team claimed its second win in as many days when it derailed Rockhurst 7-2 in its regular-season finale.
The Ichabods lost little steam after sweeping Baker yesterday afternoon, getting out to a similar start after securing all three doubles points.
Blake Hunter and
Alejandro Valarezo dominated at No. 1 singles in an 8-2 win.
Matt Barlow and
Tommy Hunter reunited to edge a pair of Rockhurst netters 9-8 (7-3).
Paul Haase and
Chase Brill completed the trifecta with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
With a three-point advantage the Ichabods barreled into singles play with senior
Matt Barlow leading the way. Barlow knocked down a Hawk netter in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 to kick things off for Washburn and extending the Ichabod lead to 4-0.
Valarezo clinched the match for Washburn at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win, followed by doubles partner
Blake Hunter notching a win at No. 2 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
???????Haase made his second appearance at No. 4 singles falling in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Tommy Hunter was defeated in two at No. 5 singles in a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
Brill brought up the rear and closed out the match on a high note with his second-straight win on court six 7-5, 6-1.
The Ichabods closeout the 2016-17 regular season with a 15-3 mark, the best under head coach
Lance Lysaught. Washburn will return to action on April 19 against No. 2-seed Southwest Baptist for its opening match of the 2017 MIAA Tournament after earning a 3-seed.
