WICHITA, Kan. --- The 35
th-ranked Washburn men's tennis team made its presence known among the Division I ranks after knocking off Wichita State in a 4-3 decision Sunday afternoon at the Coleman Tennis Complex.
With the match being held at Wichita State, both schools agreed to play out the match according to NCAA Division I rules whereas one point is awarded to the team who wins at least two doubles matches. Washburn gained an early 1-0 lead over the Shockers after picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Matt Barlow paired up with
Tommy Hunter kicked things off by knocking off Jan Poboril and Murkel Dellien 6-3.
Paul Haase paired up with
Chase Brill to take down a pair of Wichita State netters in a 6-4 decision.
Alejandro Valarezo and
Blake Hunter led at No. 1 singles 4-3 before the match was cut short.
With a one-point advantage the Ichabods headed into singles play where the Shockers struck first picking up its first point of the afternoon at No. 4 singles.
Tommy Hunter was defeated in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Senior leader,
Matt Barlow, would answer the call at No. 3 singles and defeat Eddie Stoica in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
Brill was outlasted at No. 6 singles in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 before Haase came up with a big win at No. 5 singles 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 to give Washburn a 3-2 lead.

st-ranked Valarezo battled it out at No. 1 singles, but was ultimately outlasted in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 5-7.
With the match tied 3-all and the Ichabods first win over Wichita State in 13 meetings on the line
Blake Hunter went to work at No. 2 singles. The junior netter dropped the opening match 6-3, but bounced back to edge Miroslav Herzan 7-5 in the second set. Hunter kept it close in the final frame after falling behind early and ultimately clawed his way back to take the match 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.

Washburn improves to 13-3 on the season after collecting its first win over a Division I program since the 2010-11 season as well as its first under head coach
