Ichabods Look to Extend Winning Streak at Home

9/26/2017 1:47:00 PM

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn women's soccer team extended its winning streak to three matches after defeating Fort Hays State University and the University of Nebraska at Kearney this past week, and will look to build upon it with two games at home this weekend.

Goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich posted her fourth and fifth shutouts of the season in the two victories, making 13 combined saves.

In Friday's match against the Tigers, Ellie Karloff scored for the Ichabods in the 33rd minute behind an assist from Paige Ledesma. That goal was Karloff's third of the season, and first of two for the weekend.

The Ichabods scored the lone goal of the game despite being outshot for the match 13-6 and giving Fort Hays a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Washburn was more efficient with its shots, however, with five of them being on goal compared to the Tigers' three.

Eden Stoddard, the Tigers' leading scorer with 12 points, including five goals, was held scoreless on the night despite taking a season-high five shots.

After coming into the match averaging more than 12 fouls per game, the Ichabods set a new season-low with just four.

The 1-0 victory gives the Ichabods a 2-1 edge over the Tigers in their last three meetings. The next match between the two will count towards conference standings, and will take place on October 29 in Yager Stadium.

The matchup against the Lopers on Sunday was the Ichabods' second of the season. Just like the first, the Ichabods came away with a 2-0 win, this time as visitors.

After a scoreless first half, Olivia Grasso scored her first goal of the season in the 50th minute off an assist by Mackenzie Heiman, also her first of the season.

With just six shots of their own, the Ichabods faced more shots from the Lopers, 15, than they took. But for the second straight match, Washburn came away with the victory despite suffering a similar deficit in a win Friday at Fort Hays State University.

Ellie Karloff added to the score in the 74th minute by netting her team-leading fourth goal of the season, assisted by both Tera Lynch and Paige Ledesma.

Goalkeeper Kaitlin Minnich saved a season-high 10 shots and recorded her third straight shutout, fifth of the season.  Two of those saves came in the final minutes after Karloff's goal.

With the win, the Ichabods moved to 1-0-0 in MIAA action, 5-2-1 overall. They will take on the University of Central Oklahoma Friday, and Northeastern State University Sunday.
