Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball falls to Lindenwood in five sets

TOPEKA, Kan. --- For the third time in a week Washburn volleyball went the distance playing the full five sets, however unlike the night before, the Ichabods were on the wrong of the result on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Lindenwood, 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12) at Lee Arena.

Erica Montgomery paced the Washburn (11-6, 2-3 MIAA) attack as she posted a career-best 22 kills while hitting .321 with nine digs. Genna Berg finished with 17 kills as Allison Maxwell registerd 10 kills with a team-best five blocks. Allison Sadler recorded north of 50 assists for the second consecutive match as the setter tallied 57 en route to recording a double-double with 12 digs. Faith Rottinghaus led the Ichabods in digs with 21. Taylor Selk also chipped with eight kills, six digs and four blocks.

Collectively the Ichabods outhit Lindenwood (10-8, 2-3 MIAA) for the match, .232 to .217 but trailed in blocks, 12-8, and service aces, 9-3.

Trailing 11-10 in the opening set, Washburn went on a 4-0 run spurred by back-to-back kills by Montgomery to make it 14-11 Ichabods. The advantage however was brief as Lindenwood rallied back with four unanswered of its own to regain a lead at 15-14. Washburn then accounted for the next three points taking a 17-15 advantage. The Lions leveled the set at 23 but were brushed back with a kill from Selk helped Washburn secure the first set, 25-23.

Lindenwood then claimed the second set, 25-21, before ousting Washburn in the third, 25-23 to take a 2-1 match.

Washburn began the fourth set strong as it jumped out to a 5-2 lead before pushing the score to 12-5 and never looked back. Fueled by a match-best .472 hitting percentage the Ichabods cruised to a 25-17 victory for the frame, forcing the set a decisive fifth set.

The Lions pounced on an advantage quickly thanks to a 6-2 run. Washburn then trimmed the margin to one as it registerd four of the next five points to trail 7-6. The Ichabod rally however fell short as Lindenwood benefitted by Washburn service errors en route to securing the set and match.

The Ichabods will return to action at Lee Arena on October 6, when it hosts state-rival Pittsburg State before welcoming nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma on October 7.
