Ichabods fall to Bronchos in MIAA quarterfinal match

EDMOND, Okla. -- Paige Swanson's match-tying goal right before the half made things exciting in Wednesday night's MIAA tournament quarterfinal match, but top-seed and 13th-ranked Central Oklahoma responded with three unanswered second half goals to win 4-1. The Ichabods conclude their season holding a 7-10-2 overall record and 3-6-2 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos (18-1, 10-1 MIAA) got on the board first in the 25th minute. Asha Haile was in the box in front of the net when she received a pass from Morgan Cherry. Haile settled the ball and then kicked it into the back of the net to give Central Oklahoma a 1-0 lead.

With three minutes remaining in the first half, Mackenzie Heiman intercepted a pass from Central Oklahoma and kicked the ball up to Olivia Grasso. Grasso maintained ball possession for a moment before passing it over to Paige Swanson. Swanson maneuvered her way around the UCO defenders and kicked the ball from 10 yards out on the left side and watched as the ball went past the Bronchos' keeper to tie up the match.

Through the first 45 minutes, each team had scored one goal apiece while UCO led in shots 11-4. The Ichabods' goalkeeper, Bailee Russell, held on to four saves.

The score didn't stay tied for long as the Bronchos' Katie Killion quickly put the match out of reach by scoring twice in 65 seconds. Eight minutes later, Kelsie Easton scored the final goal of the match to extend UCO's lead to 4-1 in the 61st minute.

At the end of the match, Central Oklahoma had attempted 22 shots while Washburn had taken six shots. UCO also led in shots on goal, 13-2.

For the Ichabods, Swanson scored an MIAA quarterfinal goal for the second consecutive season as she netted the match-winning goal against Northeastern State last year. Ellie Karloff recorded a shot on goal and Heiman attempted two shots for Washburn. Russell finished the match with nine saves.
